Utawaleza Malawi is a community organization dedicated to fostering creativity, self-expression, and imagination among young people in Malawi through literature, arts, and culture. With initiatives like a Book Club and Book Bank, Sharing Sessions, and the Imagine Immensities Creative Research program, Utawaleza empowers youth, amplifies the voices of women and non-binary creatives, and explores Malawian culture, all while promoting African literature and collaboration in a space grounded in feminist values of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion.

The Context
Creative expression in Malawi often lacks structured platforms for collaboration and exploration of social themes through art. Emerging artists face challenges accessing mentorship, resources, and opportunities to engage with multidisciplinary creative projects.
The Imagine Immensities Creative Research program by Utawaleza is addressing this gap by promoting creativity, self-expression, and imagination through literature, arts, and culture, empowering young Malawians to explore and preserve their cultural identity.
Goals
- To foster a collaboartive space for Malawian storytellers to explore social themes through art.
- To empower creatives with skills and resources to build sustainable creative businesses.
- To strengthen networks among Malawian artists, encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration..
Process
Wona Collective partnered with Utawaleza to support the program by:
- Branding: Developed a cohesive visual identity
- Newsletter Production: Produced the Imagine Immensities Newsletter
- Creative Research Program: Led a session on creative research, equipping participants with tools to approach storytelling from a research-informed perspective.
