our hub

On top of creating digital spaces for creatives and creativity, we also work to create physical spaces that nurture creativity. Our hub is a physical space that we have put a lot of care and intention into. The Wona Collective hub is a space that we have curated in order to:

  • Cultivate relationships between creatives
  • Foster collaboration between artists
  • Create a space for learning
  • Provide access to mental health services
  • Provide a venue for creative events, workshops and opportunities
  • Create a space that is conducive to feminist sisterhood

SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES

We have partnered with Sign Language Inclusive Development (SLID) to offer classes in Malawian Sign Language. Sign Language is probably Malawi’s most overlooked language, with very few people having access to spaces where they can learn it. Malawian sign language holds Malawian history and Malawian culture, but the fact that very few Malawians understand sign language leaves this knowledge and history untapped. It also leaves an entire population of Malawians unheard, and their stories untold.

It has been important to us to not only create accessible spaces, but to create spaces that in turn foster more accessible spaces, and that is what we hope will happen with our sign language classes.

Lerato looks at the Mural she designed. The mural consists of illustrations of 4 women: Professor Address Malata, Joyce Mvula, Rachel Sibande and Tabitha Chawinga

OUR MURAL

When we began crafting our space we knew that we didn’t want it to just be an office, we wanted it to be a creative hub, where creativity, learning and co-creation can take place. We wanted it to be warm and welcoming particularly to Malawian girls and women, and as such we designed a mural of inspirational Malawian women to sit at the entrance of the hub, the mural features:

  • Chief Kachindamoto
  • Chmba
  • Joyce Mvula
  • Professor Address Malata
  • Rachel Sibande
  • Tabitha Chawinga
  • Vera Chirwa

We wanted this mural to show women with different specialties and strengths, women from different fields and women that we believe deserve to be honoured, because all dreams can make an impact and all dreamers deserve their flowers.
